Plan your trip to Nepal

Customize your trip with help from a local travel specialist.

If you are a solo traveler, this can feel like a door slamming in your face. But don't cancel your flight just yet. There is a "hack" that is completely legal, cost-effective, and arguably more fun than trekking alone.

It’s called Group Joining. Here is everything you need to know about navigating the rules and why joining a mixed group is the smartest move you can make for the Manaslu Circuit in 2026.

The "2-Trekker Rule" Explained (And Why You Can't Ignore It)

The Manaslu region borders Tibet and is classified as a "Restricted Area." Because of this status, the Department of Immigration enforces strict permit regulations to ensure safety and border control.

The Golden Rules for 2026:

  1. Minimum 2 People: You cannot obtain a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP) on your own. You must have a minimum of two trekkers (plus a guide) listed on the permit application. Application must be submitted from registered travel agency of Nepal.

  2. Mandatory Guide: You cannot trek without a government-licensed guide. No exceptions.

The Solo Trekker's Dilemma:

If you show up alone, you won't get a permit. Some shady agencies might offer to put a "ghost trekker" (a fake name) on your permit to bypass this, but we strongly advise against it. Checkpoints are strict, and if you are caught, you face heavy fines and immediate deportation from the restricted zone.

The Solution: Fixed Departure Group Joining

So, how do you trek Manaslu if you are traveling solo? You join one of our Fixed Departure groups.

We pair you with other like-minded solo travelers or small groups to form a "permit-eligible" team. This satisfies the government requirement perfectly:

  • Legal Compliance: You are on a real permit with real trekkers.

  • Guaranteed Departure: As long as we have 2 people signed up, the trek is a go.

The Math Behind the 50% Savings

How It Slashes Your Costs Trekking solo (private) means you are paying for the entire infrastructure of the trip yourself. When you join a group, you split these heavy fixed costs with others.

Here is the breakdown of an average 14-Day Manaslu Trek budget:

Expense CategorySolo Private Trek (You Pay 100%)Group Joining (Shared Cost)The "50%" Difference
Transportation (KTM-Machha Khola & Return)$450 (Private Jeep both ways)$60 (Shared Bus/Jeep)You Save $390
Guide Salary (Mandatory for 14 Days)$420 ($30/day, paid by you)$70 (Split among ~6 trekkers)You Save $350
Porter (Carries 25kg)$350 (Standard salary)$175 (1 porter shared by 2)You Save $175
AccommodationSingle Supplement (Extra cost)Twin Sharing (Included)You Save ~$100
ESTIMATED TOTAL~$1,500+ USD~$750 - $850 USDSAVED 50%

By joining a group, you get the exact same guide, the same views, and the same permit access—but you keep an extra $700+ in your pocket.

3 Hidden Benefits of Group Joining

Beyond the legal permits and the cost savings, there are three massive advantages to our group dates:

Safety in Numbers

The Larkya La Pass stands at 5,106 meters (16,752 ft). Altitude sickness is real, and trails can be unpredictable. In a group, you have a support system. If you struggle, there are teammates to cheer you on and a guide to manage the pace. You are never truly alone in the mountains.

Instant Trekking Partners

Manaslu attracts a specific type of traveler: adventurous, respectful of culture, and nature-loving. Our groups often turn strangers into lifelong friends. You’ll share tea, play cards in the teahouses, and celebrate together at the summit.

Better Teahouse Priority

In peak seasons (October/November), teahouses fill up fast. Large groups with reputable agencies (like ours!) often get priority booking for the best rooms. Solo trekkers or small unorganized groups sometimes end up sleeping in dining halls.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to share a room with a stranger?

A: Standard packages are based on twin-sharing. We pair you with a trekker of the same gender. If you prefer your own space, a "Single Supplement" is available for an extra fee (subject to availability in high altitude).

What is the maximum group size?

A: We cap our Manaslu groups at 10-12 people. This ensures the guide can pay attention to everyone and maintains the peaceful vibe of the trek.

Can I trek at my own pace?

A: Absolutely. Our groups always have a lead guide and an assistant guide (sweeper). Fast walkers can go ahead, and those who want to take photos can linger at the back. No one is left behind.
